What a week here on Maui! The pressure was on and so were the contestants of the Maui Womens Pro 2017 for this last event of the year. Wednesday started off with a solid sized swell finding it´s peak within thursday. Fortunately and in favor for everybody´s nerves the swell hung around for friday and delivered some finals worthy walls and the occasional bomb.
Gilmore vs. Wright - we couldn´t have wished for more passion in one heat combined with a few absolute screamers as a topping. Gilmore used deliberate strategy and her indefeasible style to beat the newly crowned back to back world champ Tyler Wright in Honolua Bay. "The was one of the funnest, most enjoyable heats I've ever had,“ she said. Steph Gilmore admitted to being nervous surfing against Tyler. "I always have such great surfs against Tyler. She always pushes me …“
Malia Manuel vs. Bronte Macaulay - Bronte made her first CT Semifinal and Malia struggled with an injury and couldn’t be a part of the past few events this year. Though she came back stronger than before and pulled into some serious bombs this event. Steph Gilmore: „Whenever I turned around Malia was surfing a bomb…“
"When I came back [from injury], I tried to not have too high of expectations so I would not be disappointed," Manuel said. "But, this is a great stepping stone. I wish this year wasn't over already.“
The Final was an overall Stephanie Gilmore show! While Malia played her game on the safe side waiting 15 minutes to take off on her first wave, Steph scored on the Inbetweeners.
Stephanie Gilmore won the event, Tyler Wright won the title.
In the end this years Maui Womens Pro was a perfect ending for an accountable year in women surfing and gave us a glimpse of what is to come for the next season.
