„It’s time“ – Mick Fanning retires from WSL World Tour

Mick Fanning retires

3 x World Champion Mick Fanning hangs up his jersey: he announced his retirement from the WSL Championship Tour. The first two events of the 2018 CT season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and the Rip Curl Bells Beach will be his last two events as a competitive Surfer of the WSL’s Championship Tour.

“I will be competing at the opening event at home on the Gold Coast and then wrapping things up at the Rip Curl Pro. Bells Beach is where my Championship Tour career really kicked off, I’ve always loved the place and it seems a fitting stop to finish things up.“

Mick Fanning has dropped out of tour: The Interview

“I feel like I’ve just lost the drive to compete day-in day-out now. It’s been something I’ve been doing for 17 years, and even before that through QS and Juniors, and I feel that I just can’t give it 100 percent anymore. I’m just not enjoying it as much as I was in the past. I still love surfing, and I’m still super excited by it, but I feel that there’s other paths for me to take at this stage in my life.“

22 Championship Tour victories, three World Titles and one bruised shark - for more than 17 years Mick Fanning has been apart of the most successful Surfers on the planet. Mick has made history in many ways and we hear there is still more to come!

„The tour has given me so much but I need a fresh challenge. I’m also looking forward to evolving my own surfing in new ways, visiting unfamiliar places and taking on different experiences“

While Mick is retiring from competitive Surfing on the WSL’s Tour he will remain working with them in an Ambassadorial role as the WSL stated in their press release. In cooperation with the World Surf League Mick will be supporting the WSL’S ocean health platform PURE and help develop surfing and various other projects.

„My time on tour has been incredibly rewarding and I have so many amazing memories, all of which wouldn’t be possible without some very special people...My Mum, Dad, Sister and Brothers. I love you.“

“My sponsors that have stood by me and continue to back my goals.

„My shaper Darren Handley and his entire team for the care and hard work they put into every single one of my boards.“

„My fellow competitors on tour, you are like brothers and sisters to me.“

„My very tight support crew that have been there in good and tough times, thank you for always being honest with me. And thanks to the fans and everyone that has encouraged me and cheered me on for all these years.“

“I’m looking forward to life away from the tour while keeping a close eye on things. I’m so proud of our sport and the way it continues to evolve. The performance level on the Championship Tour and the Big Wave Tour is remarkable. I can’t wait to watch it all go down as one of the sport’s biggest fans.“
